Saturday marks a long-awaited occasion for me. We're getting rid of the carpet in the living room and dining room!

The carpet was put in about a year before we moved in, but it is obvious that the previous owners got the absolute cheapest grade possible. Stains that weren't even made by us keep reappearing, despite steam cleaning them every other week at times. And with the traffic we have through the house when hosting small group, I don't have time to clean the carpets all the time!

At first we had planned on refinishing the existing hardwood floors. However, upon further investigation, we learned that the previous owners put GLUE and UGLY TILE over the hardwood floors in the dining room area! Idiots! Not only that, it appears that they had potted plants in front of the living room window which warped the boards badly.

After weighing the time, effort and money it would take to sand off all the glue and repair the warped and stained boards, we decided to get laminate hardwood - which is just as much, if not more, durable and fairly simple to install. It helps that our good friend runs his own construction business and was able to get it for us AT COST!

Owen sure enjoyed helping out. He got out his own tools and tried to do everything Jonathan did. He was given the responsibility of putting the tiles in the trash bucket and he acted like it was the coolest job he's ever had in his whole life. Notice the adult-sized "glubs" (gloves)!

There are some areas that made it clear why the previous owners decided to cover up the hardwood...

But other areas where the wood was in such great shape it made me sad we were covering it up.

More to come!
